As the second-largest city in Cyprus, Limassol boasts a range of car rental companies. The important thing is to compare a range of offers to make sure you get the deal that’s right for you.

Often referred to as the island of love (Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the waves near Paphos), renting a car is the best way to see Cyprus in all its divine beauty.

In little more than an hour’s drive, you can take in ancient ruins, marvellous Mediterranean beaches and the stunning Troodos Mountains.

Hiring a car from airports near Limassol

Limassol is accessible via two international airports. Paphos International (PFO) is a 50-minute drive from town, while the larger Larnaca International (LCA) is 55 minutes away. You can pick your hire car up directly from either location.

As the country’s largest airport, Larnaca International has more direct flights from the UK, meaning it’s usually the best bet for a bargain flight. The drive from either airport is fairly straightforward, consisting mainly of A-roads – a smooth introduction to driving in Cyprus.

To collect a hire car from either Paphos International or Larnaca International, clear customs, collect your bags and head to the row of car rental companies in the arrivals hall.

Hermes Airports operates both airports, so many of the facilities are the same. At both airports you’ll find a good range of car rental companies.

Larnaca International (LCA):

  • Avis / Budget: (+357) 242 056 66
  • Hertz: (+357) 240 086 92
  • Europcar: (+357) 240 086 86
  • Sixt: (+357) 252 577 24
  • Astra Car Rental: (+357) 225 581 20
  • Petsas Rent a Car: (+357) 246 433 50
  • AIDA Rent a Car: (+357) 253 211 15

Paphos International (PFO):

  • Avis / Budget: (+357) 242 056 66
  • Hertz: (+357) 260 073 13
  • Europcar: (+357) 268 226 33
  • Sixt: (+357) 253 123 45
  • Astra Car Rental: (+357) 225 581 40
  • Petsas Rent a Car: (+357) 264 230 46

Whether you’re flying into Paphos or Larnaca, it’s always best to book your car hire in advance.

Thinking ahead means you’re likely to have a wider choice of vehicles than if you turn up to make a reservation on the day. You’ll also have more time to compare options and consider any fees or available extras when you’re not in the busy arrivals hall, fresh off your flight.

All you’ll need to do is stroll up to the car hire desk, give your details (including passport and driving licence) and you’ll be on your way to Limassol before you can say “Yamas!”

Driving in Limassol

Wherever you pick up the keys, there are a few things to keep in mind when you take to the road in Cyprus.

The first is easy: Cyprus drives on the left, just like the UK. So, you can approach junctions, slip roads and roundabouts in the same way you would normally. Thankfully, the road signs are in English as well as Greek.

The rules of the road are largely the same too. Unless clearly signed, go for 50km/h (30mph) in urban areas, 80km/h (50mph) on rural roads and 100km/h (60mph) on motorways. You might get a ticket if you forget to use your indicators.

There are, however, some local customs to be aware of. For one, don’t be alarmed if you notice other cars with dipped headlights on during the day. However, it is mandatory to use your dipped headlights at dawn and dusk. Specifically, during the 30 minutes after sunset and the 30 minutes before sunrise.

Cyprus has a handful of motorways, mainly around its coast. So, if you head inland or off the usual tourist trail, you should expect single tracks and some rocky terrain.

Finally, check your insurance documents if you plan to cross the Green Line into Northern Cyprus. Officially, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, it is not recognised by the UK government and many car rental policies do not cover travel in the region.
