Driving in Cala d’Or

The biggest thing to note about driving in Cala d’Or – and Spain as a whole – is that you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road. Luckily, the main roads are easy to drive, and there’s the bonus of coastal roads offering spectacular views.

In rural areas, you may come across rugged dirt tracks and occasional wildlife wandering across, so keep your eyes peeled. Also, stay alert for bikes – Majorca is a bucket list destination for cyclists, so give them a wide berth, especially when they’re tackling the hills.

If you plan to explore mountainous villages and historic towns too, consider opting for a small rental car in Cala d’Or – they’re better for the single-car roads. Many of the mountain roads have steep hairpin bends, so keep right and drive in a low gear. Towns and villages also have narrow roads and limited parking on market day.

The speed limits are 120km/h (75 mph)for motorways, 90-100km/h (56-62 mph) on main roads and between 20-50km/h in built-up areas (12-31 mph). The alcohol limit is 0.05%. Check your hire car in Majorca has Spain’s compulsory warning triangle, headlamp beam deflectors and reflective jackets.
