If you’re visiting the resort town of Caleta de Fuste your plans will probably involve laidback sunbathing on its sheltered beach and active time in, on and under the water. But hire a car and you can continue the beach holiday vibe across all of Fuerteventura.

For instance, from Caleta de Fuste, it’s a short drive to the Aguas Verdes natural swimming pool, while Corralejo’s shape-shifting sand dunes are 42km (26 miles) away. An hour’s drive south, meanwhile, takes you to Morro Jable’s 12 km-long (7.5 miles) Playa del Matorral beach.

Driving in Fuerteventura

With limited public transport, renting a car in Caleta de Fuste is the best way to beach hop around the island.

Before you travel, there are a few things to note. Firstly, Fuerteventura drives on the right – the opposite of the UK. Secondly, speed limit signs are in kilometres per hour, not miles. The speed limit for cars is 120km/h (75 mph) on the highway, 90-100km/h (56-62 mph) on rural roads and 20-50km/h (12-31 mph) in built-up areas.

The two main roads are the FV-1 road from Corralejo in the north to Puerto del Rosario and the FV-2 from Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable in the south. Both are smooth to drive along and easy to reach from Caleta de Fuste, though there are some unpaved roads to more remote parts of the island.

A warning triangle, headlamp beam deflectors and reflective jackets are compulsory, so check that your hire car has these before you set off. And note that the drink-drive limit in Spain is 0.05%, lower than England, Wales and Northern Ireland’s 0.08%.
