Driving in Costa Teguise

Wherever your Lanzarote road trip takes you, there are a few things to keep in mind when driving. Most importantly, Lanzarote (and, indeed, all of Spain) drives on the right, so take extra care when approaching junctions and roundabouts on the ‘wrong' side.

To avoid getting a hefty fine, stick to all posted speed limits. In most cases, these are 20km/h (approximately 12 mph) in residential areas, 50km/h (approximately 31 mph) in built-up zones, between 90km/h and 100km/h (approximately 56-62 mph) in rural areas and 120km/h (approximately 75 mph) on motorways.

A few more things could land you a fine on the road, too. Lanzarote's drink–driving limit is 0.05%, slightly below the UK's 0.08%. Falling foul of this could land you with a €1,000 fine (or worse). You can also get a fine for driving in the wrong footwear – so flip-flops are a no-no when you're behind the wheel.

Finally, children under 12 and less than 135cm in height must have an approved booster seat. They’re also not permitted to travel in the front of a vehicle unless children also occupy all back seats. Breaking this rule could result in an on-the-spot fine of €200.
