Driving in Salou

Hire a car in Salou and get set for a road trip along a winning coastline with gorgeous Mediterranean views from the C31 road. Or, head inland where the beaches give way to well-maintained roads that cut through sweeping valleys and wind around the Montserrat mountain.

When driving in Spain, remember it’s the other way around – you’ll drive on the right and overtake on the left. Speed limits, which are in kilometres an hour, are typically 120km/h (approximately 75 mph) for motorways, 90-100km/h (approximately 56-62 mph) on main roads and 20-50km/h (approximately 12-31 mph) in built-up areas. The alcohol limit for drivers is 0.05% but it’s advised you don’t drink at all if you’re going to drive.

Road signs with the prefix AP show a toll motorway, which you can pay for by cash or card at the toll booths. It’s also compulsory to carry a warning triangle and have headlamp reflector beams on your car. If you happen to break down, wear a reflective jacket on the roadside to avoid the risk of getting fined.

If you want to go off the beaten track, road conditions can be less well-maintained and narrow, so check your route before you head into more remote locations.
