Remember that to drive in Turkey, you either need to have your UK driving licence notarised in Turkish or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Make sure you get this sorted well in advance of your trip.
It’s a short walk from the terminal to the car rental area where you can pick up and drop off your car. You’ll find petrol stations on the main airport access road, which is useful for filling up the tank on your way to return your car. Rental cars here also often come equipped with an HGS device for automatic toll payments. Ask your provider about this.
Istanbul city centre is around 40km (25 miles) from the airport along the O-7 motorway. The speed limit in Turkey’s urban areas is 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph) and on motorways it’s 120km/h (approximately 75 mph).
The bustling city centre is often congested, so it’s a good idea to plan your route before you set off. Street parking is also difficult to find, so opt for a multi-story car park if possible. Then, check out attractions like the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar.
