Driving in Birmingham

Birmingham is a very well-connected city. Sitting at the crossroads of the M6, M5, and M42 motorways, you’ll find that you have easy access to popular destinations like the Cotswolds and Malvern Hills.

Traffic in the city centre can be very busy during peak hours, with buses, trams and cyclists sharing the road with cars. To avoid delays, plan your travels in and out of Birmingham outside the rush hours of 7.30am–9am and 4.30pm–6.30pm, or allow extra time.

Parking in Birmingham is mostly paid, with multi-storey options at the Bullring and the Mailbox offering convenient city centre access. There’s ample parking at the Birmingham NEC, which hosts numerous national events from Crufts to Comic Con. Park-and-ride services on the outskirts are also available.

If you’re venturing north of the city with your Birmingham car rental, you’ll likely encounter the infamous Spaghetti Junction. An intricate motorway interchange connecting Birmingham to much of the UK, it is often described as one of – if not the – most complicated junctions in the country.

For a quicker route around the Midlands, you may want to opt for the M6 Toll, Britain’s only toll motorway, which bypasses the busier sections of the M6 over a 43km (27 miles) stretch from Coleshill to Cannock.
