Renting a car in Orlando

Dubbed the ‘Theme Park Capital of the World’, Orlando is a fun-filled, larger-than-life playground for all ages.

Spend action-packed days enjoying Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, then take some time to explore the city’s lush gardens, galleries and museums. The Orlando food scene is great too, and you can tuck into tasty dishes from food trucks, Michelin-starred restaurants, and everything in between.

To see even more of Florida, hire a car from Orlando. Whether you’re heading towards Gulf Coast beaches or the wild Everglades, the Sunshine State is made for epic road trips. You can easily pick up a car rental from the city centre or the airport.

Fast facts

  • Any additional requirements: Expect to pay a young driver’s surcharge if you’re under 25

Orlando city centre pick-up

  • Sixt: +18 887 498 227
  • Miles Car Rental: +14 072 186 108

If you want even more flexibility, consider a one-way hire car from Orlando. There’s usually an extra fee for this, but it can still be cheaper than the cost of making a return trip or using other types of transport.

For Orlando's main tourist areas, take Interstate 4 (I-4) westbound. On your return journey, you’ll find a petrol station just outside the airport. Refuel here before drop-off to avoid extra fees.

Driving in Orlando

Driving in Orlando can be easy, as the roads are generally well-maintained, straight and wide. They’re also well-signed. Parking spaces are plentiful in Orlando, from on-street spots to dedicated car parks. Most require a payment.

Speed limits in Orlando are typically 25-30 mph (40-48km/h) in residential areas, 55-65 mph (86-105km/h) on rural roads and up to 70 mph (113km/h) on highways like Interstate 4 (I-4). Watch out for school zones. The limit drops to 15 mph (24km/h) when lights are flashing.

Keep in mind that most vehicles here, including hire cars, are automatic. You’ll also be driving on the right-hand side of the road.

When you’re ready to hit the road, the I-4 leads to Tampa, Miami and the Gulf Coast, while State Road 528 (the Beachline Expressway) heads east, taking you directly to Cocoa Beach and the Atlantic coastline.
